Metacentrism: Fighting political polarisation, one webinar at a time.

I’m Joseph Jojoe, a seventeen-year-old from the United Kingdom who’s passionate about mathematics, machine learning, and everything beyond. Back in July, I founded a non-profit called Metacentrism ― here’s why.

Motivation

As it stands, ‘everything beyond’ includes a good deal of politics. I’m both privileged and unfortunate to have grown up in the information age, where a constant bombardment of political information is to be expected. Granted, that can be a great thing at times: my generation is one of the most informed and politically astute in history, conscious of the issues facing our planet and capable of remedying them like never before. Regardless of political standing, it’s easy to admit that the tenacity and collective dedication of our youth is admirable.

My generation is one of the most informed and politically astute in history.

The Greta Thunbergs, Malala Yousafzais, and Nupol Kiazolus of our time are numerous, and it’s inspiring to see so many young visionaries bringing issues to the forefront on the global stage. They left me wondering where I fit into that picture ― what could I do to serve the communities I am a part of? What could I do to make a difference?

I hit upon starting an organisation that would freely disseminate knowledge surrounding contentious issues, challenging long-held views and promoting critical examination of different viewpoints, including our own. My hope is to create a platform where viewers are exposed to alternative perspectives in an unaggressive manner, developing greater empathy within the thought processes we apply to the ever-present torrent of information in our lives. I called it Metacentrism.

The (short) Metacentrism story

Political polarisation and ignorance are on the rise. The incidence of hate crimes is increasing, fierce rhetoric from our elected representatives threatens to render the moderate position ineffective if not extinct, and anti-intellectualism reigns rampant among many nationalist and populist circles.

Metacentrism aims to reduce that by facilitating informative, expert-led webinars on a range of different topics ― everything from economics to philosophy, as critical reasoning transcends political hot topics. Talks are completely free to attend, now and forever, because we want to reach as many people as possible through our work. Simple mission, small-scale work, but potentially big outcomes.

The pitch: join the community we’re creating, stay in the loop

Visit the website, and join our community by signing up to the mailing list. You’ll be notified by email when we have upcoming webinars, guaranteed to stretch your mind. Want to give a talk? Email me.
